CONTEMPORANEOUS 2026

$100,000 FOR ARTISTS

Will you join us in giving as much as you can to create this vital lifeline for artists and support the capacity to dream in our world?

Every year — every moment — the world is being born. As we at Contemporaneous imagine 2026, we’ve been thinking about that wild possibility and responsibility; that even in the darkest of times, the newness of each second allows us the gift of the capacity to create the world as we imagine it can be… the world we hope to share.

We want to ensure a world that is full of dreams, a world where all belong, a world where we have the chance to celebrate the miraculous beauty of being alive — on this planet, in this moment, with these people, in this vast, vast universe of time and space. And this is the world we wake up every morning working to create.

But even more than our particular answers to that question, we know that just that act of imagination — the ability to think of a life not as it is but as it could be — is vital to our world, and requires a great deal of creative courage. At Contemporaneous, we see it as our job to provide space for this uniquely artistic ability to shape our lives, a space for dreaming and for the imaginative power in each of us that allows for the world to continue being born.

Going into 2026, we want to give everything we can towards this possibility. And we know that it is a particularly difficult time to be an artist, with the loss of government funding and institutional support for dreams and the imagination. So we are going to do everything we can to provide for the viability of a creative life, to support the capacity to imagine and as many dreams of artists as we can. We want to say, as loudly as possible: you can be whoever you choose to be, and whoever you are, you have the power to imagine the future and shape our world.

Knowing the necessity of dreams in our world, the importance of creativity and imagination, and the unique financial difficulties for artists in this moment, this Winter, we are going to try to raise $100,000 for artists.

We know that $100,000 is an ambitious goal for our small organization — but we know as well that it is crucial in this moment that we prioritize dreams in our world, and that we ensure that everyone has the power, in every moment, to imagine the world anew.

In the coming year, Contemporaneous has planned a massive array of opportunities to give artists of every background a platform to create and share their imagination with the community. With $100,000 for artists, this is how we’ll support the creation of 2026:

  • Contemporaneous has just launched a new round of Contemporaneous: IMAGINATION — our open call that asks composers (and anyone who dreams in sound) to share their wildest ideas with us — the things they would most like to create if they had no restrictions — no matter how strange, impractical, or seemingly-impossible they might be. From these submissions, Contemporaneous will program as many of the most meaningful projects as we can in the coming seasons, finding the way to bring these boundary-exploding ideas to life. Contemporaneous: IMAGINATION has given rise to dozens of extraordinary and unique new works in the past several years, including a 16-hour inclusive performance following the sun’s trajectory on the longest day of the year, a new multimedia work about quantum physics, and a gorgeous immersive performance that included every sense… including taste!

So far this year, we’ve received hundreds of submissions to Contemporaneous: Imagination, from composers across six continents, each wonderful in its own way and entirely unlike anything else. With $100,000 for artists, we’ll bring as many of these dreams to life as we can. We know how much it means in the lives of those who are developing large-scale ideas to have a chance to share them — your support will be truly transformative in the lives of composers all over the world.

  • Contemporaneous is bringing as much beauty as we can into the world in 2026, with a dazzling parade of presentations big and small of the most beautiful musical experiences we can imagine.

From performances of dozens of highlights from the most iconic new operatic works of the 21st century on the PROTOTYPE Festival in January to a composer portrait of Lisa Bielawa at Miller Theatre in February, to a show of gorgeous music by Gavin Bryars on Bang on a Can’s LONG PLAY festival, to the release of an extraordinary new album on a major record label with music by Contemporaneous’ executive & co-artistic director Dylan Mattingly drawn from the upcoming epic History of Life, performed by Contemporaneous and Iarla Ó Lionáird, to large-scale world premieres by Brendon Randall-Myers and Paul Pinto, 2026 is going to be a year that is filled to the brim with what we love most about being alive on this planet. And we can’t wait to share it all with you!

  • Amelia Earhart once also said “everyone has oceans to fly.” Everyone has the capacity to dream — to imagine things that have not yet been. Our job in Contemporaneous is to give all people the chance to point their lives in that direction, to share with the world the experiences that matter most to them. And, in turn, this offers beauty and meaning to the community as a whole.

In 2025, we launched the Open Mic series, which creates an entirely free space for anyone with a musical idea to be able to have it performed by the incredible musicians of Contemporaneous. There are no barriers on the Open Mic — no stylistic, financial, educational, or curatorial limits. No matter who you are, you can sign up for the Open Mic and hear and share your music. There is nothing else like this, and it’s been astonishing to witness in its first year how much this means to composers around the world. The Open Mic has allowed for the premieres of thirty new works in its first year, and with $100,000 for artists, we will continue and grow the Open Mic in 2026.

The response to the Open Mic has been overwhelming in its first year, with people from all backgrounds coming together in a joyful community where the worth of every person and the value of their imaginations are never in doubt.

Participating in [the Open Mic] event is a very meaningful experience in the current political climate... By assembling together in a concert aimed at amplifying a variety of artistic voices, this event directly supports the constitutional right of freedom of assembly and freedom of speech… This open mic event traces its lineage from great countercultural assemblies that stood up to fascist governments in the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and more.

I’m rather new to composition, with my first piece being played about a year ago on a recital of mine, but I’ve been writing music my entire life with a large catalog of works that I dream of hearing played by others one day. I’m incredibly eager to become more invested in this community and musical discipline, but my portfolio and experience are rather lacking compared to peers of my age who found out much earlier in their musical careers that they loved to compose, which makes me feel that I’m not taken seriously as a composer by others around me. Contemporaneous’ Open Mic event is an incredible help in this pursuit… creating a platform and a sense of community for all artists no matter their experience to get a footing in the compositional world.

Additionally, Contemporaneous continues its Virtual Community Salons, giving space online to anyone who wants it each month to share work at any stage of development with a generous and curious community. And, Contemporaneous is expanding its reach overseas to help composers across the world find ways to hear and share their music, beginning with a partnership with a new music collective in Yogyakarta, Indonesia called Dua Ketuk, allowing composers to have their music performed and documented across the globe.

WHY NOW?

Earlier this year, the NEA canceled funding for every project that was not about the Declaration of Independence. Across the country, artists everywhere — most of whom have delicately woven together just enough income to make their life possible — lost crucial support, not just from the NEA but also from grants and institutions downstream who then had less to give. This has been devastating for artists, but while it has made it harder to live as an artist, we know as well that the need to create — the belief that it is worth using our time on this planet to create something beautiful — cannot be extinguished. Artists are still full of dreams, bursting with imagination. But they need our help.

Our $100,000 for artists campaign will ensure a space for all people to know that it will always be possible to pursue a life dedicated to imagination, that in the community we are building together, the dreams of every person are held in the highest regard. $100,000 for artists will ensure the viability of a creative life and offer artists across the world the chance to follow and share their wildest dreams while creating community space for these works, the celebration of joy and beauty, and the way we are connected together in our time on this planet.

Every dollar raised in this campaign will go directly to artists, making possible the creation and sharing of new work and the financial capacity to live as an artist.
