Applications for Open Mic Vol. 3 are now open! Following in the footsteps of a traditional "open mic" event, this program adapts the idea for a new music context with the chamber orchestral forces of Contemporaneous serving as the band, providing an opportunity for composers of all ages and skill levels in the community to submit their work — in any stage of its development — to be performed in a free performance.
An ensemble of stellar vocalists and instrumentalists come together to share the iconic music of RENT like never before. This symphonic take on the Jonathan Larson’s beloved musical includes the full score of the show, including favorites like “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Bohème,” and “Take Me or Leave Me”.
The Virtual Community Salon is a free and recurring online community gathering space hosted by Contemporaneous, where anyone can come to share artistic work in all stages of development, along with ideas, dreams, and conversation.

Composer and vocalist Lisa Bielawa—a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow and a Rome Prize winner—creates music that The New York Times has described as “ruminative, pointillistic, and harmonically slightly tart.” She takes inspiration for her work from literary sources and close artistic collaborations, and often incorporates community-making as part of her artistic vision. The dynamic Contemporaneous ensemble makes their Miller debut performing alongside the composer.
