I Used to Know Her Name

Free and open to the public

I Used to Know Her Name is an elegiac and wondrous compilation of music about the space between us, music that weaves its way into our consciousness and our involuntary memory, music of love and loss, the music of ourselves and the ones to whom we spend our time so near.

A powerful reworking of the John Lennon chart-topper Imagine at a geological speed, Aaron Jay KernisMeditation (In Memory of John Lennon) opens the performance on an intimate note. With a different kind of spellbinding grace, Brick Elegy is a wildly beautiful dreamwork for solo piano by Anna Bikales. As the classical music world celebrates the 75th birthday of the iconic American composer Philip Glass, we will perform his Metamorphosis No. 4, as reimagined for four cellos by the masterful Joan Jeanrenaud.

Contemporaneous co-artistic director Dylan Mattingly's structured improvisation Gravity and Grace will open the second half in a performance by the composer at the piano along with violinist Finnegan Shanahan. This is journey music of that space between us. And Then It Rained, a wistfully elegiac work for indeterminate instrumentation by Brooklyn-based composer and pianist David Moore, will close this special performance.
